Deleff Family
Link goes back to 680 A.D. when Bulgar Nomads occupied area south of Lower Danube, not far from where it flows into the Black Sea.
They took their name Bulgarians from the Turco-Tatar conquerors who invaded the Balkans in the 7th Century A.D. but as they formed a small portion of a larger population of Slavic already established there, they were soon absorbed by the larger group.
However, their language took on some distinct features and later became called Old Church Slavonic – The liturgical written language of the Eastern Orthodox Church. There followed several centuries of peace and war and uneasy alliances with the Christian Byzantine Empire

based at Constantinople. Finally about 1350 the first Bulgarian Empire – along with the rest of the of the Balkans – was overrun by the Ottoman Muslim (Turkish) forces from the East and it remained under their control for the next 500 years until 1887. At that time the Russian Czar sent a huge army into the Balkans and with the help of Serbian, Greek, and Bulgarian partisan forces, expelled the Ottoman forces from the Balkans.
During that long and painful occupation all inhabitants of the Balkans were subjected to extreme pressure to convert to the Muslim Faith. Some Succumbed but many hung into the Orthodox Christian Faith, even though almost all of their churches were destroyed.
The Deleff Family moved into their present location sometime between 1820 and 1840. This is a small village, Sofia, and about 60 minutes from the Black Seaport

of Varna. Its name is Dividadova and is about 5 miles from the large provincial city of Shumen, a district capital. There the family acquires a number of small plots of land and also established a vineyard.
The small parcels of land were expropriated by the communist government after 1945.
Being deprived of their land most family members were forced to labour on the huge communal farms for wages that amounted to pittance. Others had to seek employment in public service or the military.
In 1907 Dimo Deleff left a young wife and child to seek a new life in “America”

They landed in Galveston, Texas and took jobs with construction. Came on S.S. Cassel (German Passenger Liner)
In 1912, he and other Bulgarians gravitated to Oregon and then Spokane, Washington. He took a homestead near Bend, Oregon but couldn’t find water. A group of Bulgarians bought and operated a hotel in Spokane but lost it due to a accountant who defrauded them.
In April 1912, they came up to Basin Lake District in Alberta. Some went across the border to Luseland, Saskatchewan.
Dimo’s 2 brothers went back in 1912 for patriotic reasons. One was killed in the first Balkan War of 1912 and 1913 and the second was killed in the Great War which followed.
Dimo’s wife and daughter died of cholera in 1912.
