They took their name Bulgarians from the Turco-Tatar conquerors who invaded the Balkans in the 7th Century A.D. but as they formed a small portion of a larger population of Slavic already established there, they were soon absorbed by the larger group. However, their language took on some distinct features and later became called Old Church Slavonic – The liturgical written language of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
